Yikes! Generally speaking, I consider it a good rule of thumb to oppose anything that Martin Marty supports. It has served well so far!

I have been thinking about Martin Marty lately.

This quote is just downright funny - humor for me on a late Friday night.

    Thanks Greg.

chris - don’t you think it’s that kind of mindset that has us in the place where we even need something like an ‘Evangelical Manifesto’? i know your comment is somewhat sarcastic, with a dash of truth - and that’s generally my breakfast of choice, too, as i’ve mentioned around the web my shock that al mohler hasn’t signed the thing :). still, we somehow need to stop choosing sides, pinning labels of identification on everyone, standing on what we consider uncompromising principles, and implying that the other side is in bed with Satan.

it’s no longer one solution or another.

it’s now a solution or none.

    Mike,

That depends on how familiar you are with Martin Marty. How much of his stuff have you read? Have you ever heard him speak? Go to the library of a religious university near your home next time you have a day off of work, ask the people at the reference desk for a stack of old Christian Century magazines and read Martin Marty articles for a few hours.

In Matthew 7, a ways down the page from verse 1, Jesus uses some rather unkind epithets to refer to some categories of people toward whom we are to exhibit certain attitudes. Paul categorizes some people as evil men and seducers. Making these distinctions is just as much a command as “love your enemies.” Acts 20 explains it indirectly.
